Owl or Rooster? Find Your Chronotype

How your circadian preference shapes sleep timing, energy, focus, and why Portico uses chronotype to tune Dusk to your biology.

I

Why chronotype matters

Most sleep advice starts with averages: sleep eight hours, wake at the same time, avoid late caffeine, keep a consistent routine.

That advice is useful, but it misses one important fact: people are not built on the same clock.

Your chronotype is your natural circadian preference. It helps explain when your body most naturally wants to sleep, wake, focus, move, and recover. Some people are naturally earlier. Some are naturally later. Many sit somewhere in the middle.

Portico uses chronotype inside Dusk so sleep timing can be tuned to your biology, not just generic sleep hygiene.

II

What chronotype is

Chronotype is your body's natural timing preference across the day.

It is not just a habit. It is not a personality trait. It is part of your circadian biology: the internal clock that helps coordinate sleep, alertness, temperature, hormones, digestion, and cognitive performance.

At one end are strong morning types. At the other are strong evening types. Most people are somewhere between those poles.

You can think of the spectrum simply:

  • Rooster - definite morning type
  • Early bird - moderate morning type
  • Middle bird - intermediate type
  • Night owl - moderate evening type
  • Owl - definite evening type

The animal names are only a friendly shorthand. The important part is the direction and strength of your timing preference.

III

Why it changes the plan

Chronotype matters because the same schedule can feel very different to two people.

A morning type may feel sharp early, fade earlier at night, and do best with earlier exercise and focused work. An evening type may struggle with early starts but perform better later in the day. Intermediate types often have more flexibility.

When your daily schedule fights your biology, the mismatch can affect sleep quality, daytime energy, mood, appetite, training, recovery, and focus. The goal is not to use chronotype as an excuse. The goal is to know your starting clock, then align what you can.

Even partial alignment can help.

For example, chronotype can help Portico think through:

  • when your sleep window should start
  • when you are most likely to feel alert
  • when exercise may feel easier or harder
  • when late light, caffeine, or meals may disrupt sleep
  • how to interpret sleep data in context

How to find it

Portico uses the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, often called the MEQ, as a practical starting point.

The MEQ asks about sleep timing, alertness, preferred activity timing, and how you feel at different parts of the day. It takes only a few minutes. Your score maps to one of five chronotype bands:

MEQ scoreChronotype
16-30Definite evening
31-41Moderate evening
42-58Intermediate
59-69Moderate morning
70-86Definite morning

Portico can then save your result and use it as part of your Dusk baseline.

V

What Portico does with it

Chronotype is not a diagnosis. It is a timing signal.

Once you save it, Dusk can use it to interpret your sleep and recovery more intelligently. The same bedtime, wake time, or sleep score may mean something different depending on whether you are an evening type, morning type, or somewhere in between.

Portico also uses chronotype as a clue to your broader circadian clock. It helps Dusk align recommendations around the timing of your body, including sleep pressure, alertness, recovery, and the daily rhythms that influence energy across the whole day.

Portico does not use chronotype alone. It combines it with other signals, including sleep duration, sleep timing, resting heart rate, HRV, activity, light exposure patterns when available, and your broader health context.

One number is never the whole story. Chronotype simply helps orient the clock.

What to do next

Take the MEQ test, note your result, then return to Portico and save the closest match:

  • Definite evening
  • Moderate evening
  • Intermediate
  • Moderate morning
  • Definite morning

Once saved, Portico can start using your chronotype to tune Dusk around your biology.
